Young cricketer hit by ball during match, dies

In a shocking incident, an under-19 cricketer died after being hit by the cricket ball during a match in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Thursday.

An official said that 18-year-old Jahangeer Ahmad War, aresident of GoshbughPattan, was hit by the ball in his neck during a match atthe sports stadium in Nanil village.

   

He was shifted to PHC Mattan where doctors declared him deadon arrival.  “The cricketer was hit nearthroat while trying to execute a pull shot,” District officer Youth service andsports Noor Muhamad told Greater Kashmir.

War was the student of 11th standard of Government HigherSecondary Goshbugh, Pattan in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The under-19 and under-17 cricket tournaments which weresimultaneously inaugurated at cricket ground Bijbehara on Wednesday are beingorganized by the Youth Services and Sports Department in the district.

The incident occurred during the league match being playedbetween BudgamandBaramulla districts.

Director General Youth Services and Sports DrSaleem U Rehmanwhile terming the incident highly unfortunate said, “The batsman sufferedinjuries and fell unconscious after the ball hit him between his neck and headdespite being equipped with all protective gears including helmet”

He said it was sheer bad luck that the ball hit the deceasedon that small portion which gets exposed once a batsman turns for a hook orpull.
