After paper leak allegations, SKIMS resets PhD question paper

Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) today changed the question paper of PhD entrance exam being held on Tuesday after allegations of paper leak.

A delegation of aspirants of PhD courses at SKIMS alleged that the question papers for entrance exam of PhD immunology, biochemistry and microbiology being held on 17 July has been leaked.

“We have a very deep apprehension that this year’s PhD paper has been leaked and some students already have access to the set questions,” a delegation of students alleged.

They demanded change of exam date and resetting of the question paper.

The aspirants said that there was a high chance of “compromise in secrecy” since the paper had been set much before the date of exam which is against the norm of keeping the final question paper in abeyance till exams. “We have learnt that this year’s PhD paper was set two months ago, thus giving ample time and chance for the paper to be leaked,” the aspirants alleged.

The aspirants also lodged a complaint with registrar SKIMS. Following the apprehensions, SKIMS authorities on Monday ordered cancellation of the set question paper and prepared a fresh one for the exam.

Director SKIMS, Dr Omar Javed Shah said that based on the concerns, the examination section of the Institute was directed to take “appropriate measures”. He said that there was no need to defer the exam and that the issue had already been addressed. “Exam will be held in time and we have ensured that the fears of aspirants are addressed,” he said.

Registrar SKIMS, Prof Parvaiz A Koul said that entire paper was changed today based on “inputs”. He compared the complaint of paper leak to “bomb scare”. “We cannot rubbish it even if it seems to be the remotest possibility and we have acted accordingly,” he said.
