A new toilet block constructed at Bone and Joint Hospital here more than three months ago has not been made operational, much to annoyance of patients and attendants.

The facility was constructed by Srinagar Municipal Committee (SMC) under Swatch Bharat Mission, a centrally sponsored program launched in 2014 to put focus on sanitation.

While hospital authorities had pinned hopes that the toilet block would address long pending problems, it continues to remain locked despite ready for use even after three months of its completion, said an official from hospital administration.

A doctor said lack of basic amenities including modern toilets and wash-rooms are a concern at the hospital, creating inconvenience to not just patients and attendants but hospital staff as well.

The doctor said after completion of the toilet block an inauguration stone was perched on the building. However, for some unknown reason the inauguration of the facility hasn’t taken place so far.

Damaged washrooms and toilets, leaking water and sewerage and resulting in stench in hospital corridors is an old problem at B&J Hospital, Kashmir’s tertiary care orthopedic institute. It poses risk of infections to patients. The lack of adequate drainage system in the hospital premises is another reason for concern there.

Commissioner SMC Riyaz Ahmed Wani said the facility was not made operational due to lack of water connection. He said the Commission has decided that in all public facilities in the city, they would be using ground water, and not tap water.

“We have floated tenders and within a month, we hope, we would be able to make this facility functional,” he said.

Asked why SMC was taking so long to decide about source of water for the facility, he said, the decision to use ground water was taken recently in a monthly review meeting of the department.

Medical superintendent B&J Hospital, Dr Abdul Rashid Buddoo refused to comment on the issue saying the issue was “out of my ambit of work”.
