PG Department of Pediatrics GB Pant Hospital today held a sensitization session regarding IYCF at Government Medical College Srinagar.

The two week programme was held by the Department of Pediatrics in collaboration with National Health Mission and Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI).

The sensitization session was held for the faculty of GMC, students and nurses. During the sessions, Prof. Khushwaha, course director and Prof. Kaisar Ahmed, head, Department of Pediatrics spoke about the importance of early intervention by way of exclusive breastfeeding feeding and complimentary feeding in reducing the malnutrition burden. He also dwelt on increasing the level of mental abilities in children and producing adults with less risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and hypertension.

The speakers also stressed the need to have these trained counselors in hospitals where deliveries are conducted to help mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth and to prevent separation of babies from mothers. This would also bring down the infection rates in newborns, hence reducing mortality.

These interventions if applied can reduce the infant mortality by 22 percent. The Principal, GMC, Dr. Rafiq Pampori was the chief guest on the occasion.
