Jewellers at Hari Singh High Street (HSHS) on Wednesday held a protest against proposed setting up of fisheries department outlet at the Sarafa Bazar.

Scores of protesting traders shouted slogans against the decision of authorities to construct the fish outlet. The jewelers closed their shops in protest and threatened to launch an agitation incase authorities go ahead with their plan of the fish outlet at the gold market.

Bashir Ahmad Rather, president, All Kashmir Gold Dealers and Workers Association said the space proposed for fisheries outlet was being used for car parking for last several years.

“On one side authorities are keen on setting up on-street parking and now they are depriving us of our parking facility by allowing this fish market. What is the need of a fish outlet in a Gold market? This will hit our business and affect our livelihood,” Rather said.

Mehraj-u-din Batloo, a trader at Hari Singh High Street said construction work on the fisheries outlet, which started a month ago, was stopped some time back. “But the work has restarted. The Divisional Commissioner had assured us that work will be stopped and our space will be returned. We hope authorities realize that we are hard-pressed for space,” Batloo said.
