Students at Kashmir University staged a protest in the campus against killing of a student-turned-militant from Pulwama, in a shootout with government forces on Thursday.

Hostel boarders of Zakura campus and MA and MAK boys’ hostel assembled in main campus of Kashmir University to register their protest against the killing of Showkat Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Padgampora, Awantipora.

The slain militant had completed his B. Pharmacy. He had joined militancy on 03 October and was associated with Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen.

Shouting pro-freedom slogans the students staged protest outside B. pharmacy department and marched towards Sir Syed Gate to offer funeral prayers in absentia for the slain rebel.

The number of students kept swelling as they marched towards the gate, eyewitnesses said, adding the protesting students raised pro freedom and anti-India slogans.  Some of the students were carrying banners with pictures of slain militants Mannan Wani and Professor Muhammad Rafi.

A student said Bhat was always at forefront during any student protest inside campus. An official said the slain militant was a 2016 pass out student of the varsity and had recently applied for M. Pharma.
