To create awareness about issues related to child sexual abuse among parents, a daylong workshop by clinical psychologist Zoya Mir was today held at the Other Side Café in Nigeen here.

The workshop ‘Teach them to Shout’ was aimed to encourage parents and other adults to confront the issue of the child abuse and help children break the silence instead of facing a lifelong suffering.

A trained psychologist about the issue, Zoya Mir, highlighted the main problems among parents who don’t connect with their children and creating vacuum, which hampers proper development of the children.

Zoya regularly testifies as an expert witness in child abuse cases and has worked as a child and family therapist treating children who have experienced abuse.

Workshop included three sessions: the interactive part, the theatre and the recitation of a write up. She spoke about the inappropriate touching of children, the non-contact abuse, reality check of abuses and how it happens.

She stressed that people need to break the stigma that with “our child abuses can’t or don’t happen”. “Child sexual abuse never comes up with a tagline or certain age, it is an observation which elders have to make,” said Zoya.

The workshop, which was first of its kind held in the city, was free of cost for parents on first cum first serve basis. “It was a social cause and the need of an hour, one has to speak about this, so we didn’t charge anything,” said the organiser Mir Muneeb, the owner of The Other Side Cafe.
