364 aspirants appear in GATE

Around 364 GATE aspirants on Saturday appeared in exams at various exam centres set up here by the ministry of human resource development (MHRD).

The MHRD has set up six exam centres in Srinagar and Baramulla district for the GATE aspirants who were scheduled to appear in their exam on February 9 and 10. 

   

GATE exam centres were set up at Haktech IT service Sidco industrial estate Rangreth, KITE polytechnic at Wawoosa Rangreth, Eshai Online Services Munwarabad, Faster Computer Education Rawalpora, Infotech Computer Education and SSM college of engineering and Technology Diver Parihaspora.

“Today, there were no students in the exam centre set up in SSM College but tomorrow 150 students will appear in the exams there,” said officiating director NIT who was coordinating the GATE on Saturday.

Earlier, no centre was designated for these students in Kashmir due to which 500 aspirants missed their exam on February 2 and 3. Already, state government arranged a special flight of Indian Air force to air lift the aspirants to Jammu to enable them to appear in exams there.

GATE is an All-India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board -GATE, Department of Education in ministry of human resources development (MHRD).

The exam was scheduled in four phases on February 2, 3 and February 9 and 10.

Meanwhile, the students after appearing in the exams thanked the governor administration for setting up exam centres in Valley which provided an opportunity to the aspirants to appear in the exams.

“But it should have been done earlier because last day preparations is important for aspirants but unfortunately we were subjected to mental trauma during last few days,” said Shabir Ahmad, an aspirant whose centre was set up at Eshai Online Services Munwarabad here.

The students demanded that in future the government should ensure that exams centres are set up in Kashmir at the time of all national level crucial exams like CMAT, NET, NEET and GATE.

“The government woke up to the issue at the last moment due to which 500 students missed their exams on February 2 and 3,” said Shabir Ahmad an aspirant who appeared GATE on Saturday. 

A group of 500 students earlier missed their exams as they could not reach to their exam centres in Jammu owing to inclement weather which resulted in prolonged closure of Jammu-Srinagar highway and cancellation of flights.

Greater Kashmir on January 10 reported about the persistent demand from aspirants to have a separate exam centre in Kashmir for GATE. Also, divisional administration had written to the chief secretary of the J&K state about the students’ grievance. But the MHRD had categorically refused to set up exam centres in Kashmir.

“But at the last moment Governor of J&K state and Chief Secretary personally intervened into the matter and convinced MHRD to set up exam centres in Kashmir,” an official said.
