Amid lockdown, people promote beekeeping, vegetable farming

Amid the lockdown, many people have switched over to conventional ways of overcoming shortage of vegetable at their own level.

Agriculturedepartment, Kashmir has also started a campaign to encourage kitchen gardening.

   

Kashmir Welfare Trust, avoluntary group has taken an initiative to encourage kitchen gardening inSrinagar to help overcome shortage of vegetables amid COVID19 lockdown.

ManzoorWangnoo, chairman KWT said to begin with, he first replaced the lawn at hishouse by a kitchen garden to grow vegetables.

“Vegetablescan’t be separated from our daily meals. We should learn the art of becomingself-sufficient,” he said, adding they would encourage people to engage invegetable farming.

“Itis good to see that administration is cooperating with us. They are providingseeds to the people on rebate. I request people to come forward and start suchpractices at their home,” he said.

Apartfrom vegetables, KWT has started beekeeping to enhance income of needy duringCOVID19. “Besides providing a source of income, beekeeping can supportlivelihood diversification along with increased agricultural productivity,”Wangnoo said.

He said the beekeeping “is economical activity and we willimplement it at various places. If we get productive results, we will take theinitiative at a broader scale.”
