Scores of Angandwari workers and helpers took out a protest march at city centre Lal Chowk demanding revocation of the government order directing them to work under Panchs and Sarpanchs.
The protesting anganwadi workers marched from Residency Road to Ghanta Ghar amid slogans in favor of their demands.
“We have been working independently through integrated child development scheme (ICDS) from years and now government has decided that we will have to work through Gram panchayats. This is sheer humiliation as our salaries and nutrition for children will come through Panchs and Sarpanchs which we believe will hamper our work and lead to privatization of the scheme,” said Lateefa Ganai, vice president Anganwadi workers and helpers Union.
“We have our own supervisors. Bringing our work under Panchs and Sarpanchs will serve no purpose,” she said.
The protest rally was also supported by Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), who called for revocation of the order and regularization of anganwadi workers.
As per the order, disbursement of monthly honorarium of Anganwadi works and helpers will take place through Gram Panchayats. The order also states that gram panchayats will monitor and supervise the working of anganwadi centers which did not went down well with anganwadi workers.
Earlier this week anganwadi workers under the banner of Anganwadi workers and helpers association held a protest calling for revocation of the order.
President of the Association Tasleema Subhan said that they will not work under Panchs and Sarpanchs. The protesting workers and helpers said that if the order is not revoked they will intensify the protest.
