Police on Saturday claimed to have busted a gang of car lifters in north City and arrested two “habitual offenders” in connection with the case while 15 vehicles including motorcycles were recovered.
“During last September deluge an organised group of car lifters took advantage and succeeded in stealing cars from and around north zone of Police Srinagar,” a police handout said.
“In this regard police registered fourteen FIRs no 95/14, 97/14, 106/14, 115/14, 02/15, 03/15, 04/15 in Police Station M.R Gunj, 102/14, 133/14, 138/15, 180/14, in Police Station Safakadal, 01/15 in Police Station Rainawari and 96/14, 128/14 in Police Station Khanyar,” it added.

“Two car lifters Muhammad Asif of Gurez presently living at Namchbal, Srinagar and Ashiq @Basit Ahmad of PuhrooSarnal, Anantnag at present Budshah Nagar NatiPora were apprehended and all the stolen cars were recovered on the instance of arrested duo,” the police handout said.
When contacted the SDPO said breakthrough was achieved following tracking of call records of the suspects. He said more arrests were expected.
