Prisoners lodged at Central Jail Srinagar on Wednesday called off their hunger strike after assurances by a high level team from the district administration that their grievances will be addressed on priority
Official sources said that a team of officials from thedistrict administration Srinagar headed by Tehsildar Khanyar Abdur Rehman Darvisited Central Jail Srinagar and interacted with the jail inmates. “The teamassured all possible support to the protesting prisoners and promised themtheir issues will be looked into on priority,” they said.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary said onthe request of Superintendent of Police Central Jail Srinagar a magistrate wasdeputed who interacted with the jail inmates. “It has been reported thatinmates have to highlight some issues and accordingly a team of judiciary andexecutive will visit the jail after April 19. “The committee headed by subdistrict magistrate (SDM) Sandeep Singh has already submitted its report.Presently there is no strike in the Central Jail,” the DC said.
The Central Jail inmates have been on a protest for past oneweek and they have not been meeting their family members as a mark of protest.Two prisoners were injured and the Central Jail equipment was damaged while twobarracks were set ablaze after inmates refused to shift to the newlyconstructed barracks. Police had registered an FIR into the incident andinvestigations are on.
After the incident, a team of lawyers from the High CourtBar Association had also visited the Central Jail and prepared a report. In itsreport the Bar team had stated that there was a communication breakdown betweeninmates and the jail administration. The Bar its report had also stressed thatthe inmates want that the incident that led to the verbal dual between them andthe jail authorities should be probed by a sitting high court judge.
