Central team on cleanliness survey concludes visit

A team of experts from central government concluded their visit after conducting cleanliness survey in the summer capital. 

The survey was part of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and is being conducted to rank 4041 cities based on assessment of progress from January 2017 till December 2017. The objective of the survey is to scale up coverage of the ranking exercise and encourage towns and cities to actively implement mission initiatives in a timely and innovative manner, 

   

During its visit, the team visited Chanapora, Dalgate, Rambagh, Lal Chowk and other areas to make assessment of improvement in sanitation and solid waste management.

The team having representative from ministry of housing and urban affairs (formerly ministry of urban development) Danish Muhstaq as key observer arrived in Srinagar on 24 January. The  survey is being facilitated by SMC under Survekshan (survey) 2018. 

The team held a meeting with various officials in Srinagar. It also interacted with people in various markets and areas to get feedback as whether they are aware about the need and importance of solid waste management and mission of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Their random questions to public also include whether a common man has felt any improvement on ground in terms of sanitation and other civic related matters from past one year.

Danish Mushtaq had also visited Srinagar in 2017 as key observer during the 2017 survey. In 2017, out of 434 cities across India, Srinagar appeared at serial number 244 in ranking. This year, around 4041 cities are participating in the survey.

The survey is undertaken by the experts on various parameters. By positive response from the public, the Srinagar city can obtain upto 1200 points.

“I felt a lot of improvement on ground this year. Last year, I had visited Srinagar also. During this visit, I interacted with many local people, traders, civil society groups, youth and others. They are giving positive feedback about SMC and geology and mining department,” he said.

Danish added that SMC has performed well on all components of Swachh Bharat Mission including open defecation free (ODF), solid waste management, information, education and Communication (IEC) and capacity building. 

The survey attempts to capture the progress in six broad parameters, including collection and transportation of municipal solid waste, sanitation related progress.

Exuding confidence, that Srinagar would appear among top 10 cities in 2018 survey, SMC commissioner Riyaz Ahmad Wani said, “the team is monitoring whether we have started campaigns promoting Swachh Survekshan, engaged citizens in waste management, maintained community and public toilets.” 

The commissioner said that a detailed report was presented before the team of experts along with other documents and evidences. He informed that the report include achievement, initiatives and measures undertaken by SMC from past one year.

Earlier, the key observer Danish Mushtaq had held a meeting with various officials of different departments including commissioner SMC and director local bodies to have first account of activities on ground under SBM.
