Civil society group demands highway ban revoked

Members of a civil society group Wednesday held a protest against the recent government ban on civilian vehicular traffic along the Udhampur-Baramulla stretch of the national highway for two days a week, demanding the order be revoked.

Last week government reserved the longest part of thenational highway exclusively for the movement of security forces every Sundayand Wednesday until end of May. 

   

The members of the group, J&K Civil Society, held aprotest at the Press Enclave here holding banners demanding the ban order bewithdrawn.

The protestors included women members of the group, decryingthe ban as anti-people likely o affect the state’s education, economy andemergency services.

“We have been already under depression due to issues facedby us on daily basis, this highway ban will affect the day to day life of everyKashmiri,” said Muhammad Altaf Bhat, chairman of the civil society group.

The protesting members said that the government could findother alternatives to transport security forces without banning the civilianmovement along the crucial national highway.
