CORONAVIRUS SCARE | SMC works on precautionary measures in Srinagar

A day after authorities at Srinagar Municipal Corporation announced precautionary measures against coronavirus threat, several activities were started Thursday to implement the directions.

Fumigation was done at Hari Singh High Street, Regal Chowk,Residency Road and MA Road, here—the markets have been put on priority list inview of rush of shoppers and commuters.

   

Special sanitation teams removed the dust from roads androadsides at historical Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) and its adjacent areas.

 “We have been directedto improve the degree of sanitation. We are being provided with specialequipment to protect ourselves from any infection while carrying out thesanitation job,” said a worker.

He said they have also been counseled about how to protectthemselves from the novel coronavirus.

Garbage collection points and dumpsters were sterilized andsanitized. “All these activities will be a norm in the coming days asprecautionary measure against coronavirus,” said SMC Commissioner, GazanfarAli.

IEC Information, Education and Communication partnersvisited different areas in municipal limits to spread public awareness aboutthe precautionary measure.

Copies of pamphlets containing public advisories along withpictures were also distributed among people.

Earlier, the SMC Commissioner on Wednesday had issuedseveral orders for enforcement of precautionary measures within Srinagarmunicipal limits.

As per orders, all educational institutions and coachingcenters, gymnasiums, indoor and outdoor stadia, clubs, sports centers remainedclosed.

The process to procure 1000 full quarantine body-kits andspraying machines have been initiated which would be provided to sanitationworkers.

“We have increased manpower for heightened sanitation ofpublic places, markets and worship places falling within municipal limits,”said an official, adding, “Sterilization spray was done in public mode oftransport also.”

Meanwhile, SMC Central Office remained closed to visitorsand public and will remain so till further orders.

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have been takingprecautionary measures in view of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

No case of COVID-19 has been reported in Kashmir so far. However,few persons were put under surveillance having history of travelling to virushit countries. Some have showed flu-like symptoms but were tested negative forcoronavirus.
