DAK for rationale use of masks

Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Monday advised people to make rational use of masks.

“We need to make sure wereserve the masks for healthcare workers and vulnerable who need them most,”said DAK President, Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

“Face masks should not beused by healthy individuals,” he said, adding “there is no scientific evidenceto show health benefits of using mask for non-sick persons in the communityduring a pandemic.”

He said use of masks innormal individuals creates a false sense of security that can lead to neglectof other essential preventive measures like hand washing. “Face masks shouldalso be worn by persons who are coughing or sneezing,” he said

DrHassan said it would also be rational for people in quarantine to wear facemask to prevent potential spread of the infection. “In addition, vulnerablepopulations such as aged persons and those with medical conditions should wearface masks if supplies permit,” he said, adding healthcare workers shouldmandatorily wear masks.

He said the masks should bechanged after every six to eight hours and the used ones should be disposed ofas per waste disposal guidelines.
