Downtown traders demand parking facilities

Traders of Downtown areas have expressed concern over frequent traffic jams in Downtown due to lack of parking facilities.

“We are suffering huge losses due to lack of parking facilities mainly in Zaina Kadal, Maharaj Gunj and Bohri Kadal areas,” said Nazir Ahmad Shah, chairman Shaher-e-Khaas Traders Coordination Committee.

Shah said that the committee had in 2012 identified a spot at Zaina Kadal for parking. “However, despite passing of eight years, authorities failed to develop it into parking,” he said.

He said besides customers from various areas of Kashmir, tourists also visit Downtown. “In absence of parking facilities, customers and visitors face immense problems,” he said.

He said that lack of urinals in Downtown causes inconvenience to shopkeepers and customers. “At times, customers have to use toilets in houses in absence of public urinals in Downtown,” he said.

Downtown traders also demanded starting of sumo service from Batamaloo to Old City areas.

“We urge Deputy Commissioner Srinagar to provide basic amenities particularly urinals and parking slots in Downtown. We hope that authorities will develop Downtown by preserving by reviving its glory. We assure all support for the endeavour,” Shah said.
