Furnish details about garbage collection in Srinagar: HC to SMC

The High Court on Wednesday directed Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to furnish details about stepwise method of garbage collection its segregation, dumping and how it is ultimately treated in Srinagar city. 

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation by advocate A RHanjura, seeking to curb dog menace in Srinagar City, a division bench of ChiefJustice Gita Mittal and Justice Rashid Ali Dar asked the Civic Body to informthe court as to how the garbage is collected from the households and taken todumping sites.

   

The court also sought a list of the locations from the SMCat which it has installed segregated dustbins in the Srinagar City, the mannerand schedule in which the garbage is collected therefrom.       

In response to the assurance by state’s senior additionaladvocate general B A Dar that he shall bring a report about framing of ModelSolid Waste Management bylaws by July 29, the court said Such report shall befiled by the SMC within three weeks. Advocate Momin Khan representing SMC said that the complete project ondealing with the dog menace in the Srinagar City is being run by theCorporation from its internal resources.

He drew attention of the court to various communicationsaddressed by the SMC to Housing and Urban Development Department requesting forfinancial support.

 “However no financialsupport has been extended to the Corporation till date,” Momin said.

Following the submission, the court directed Housing andUrban Development Department to consider the request made by the SMC and take adecision within three weeks.

With regard to the earlier directions to SMC to curb downthe menace of stray dogs in Srinagar city by reducing the availability ofenergy rich garbage, the court said SMC has filed a status report merelysetting out proposals made by the Chief Sanitation Officer without anythingmore.
