Group of lawyers assess condition of jail inmates

A group of lawyers today visited Central Jail Srinagar to inquire about the condition of inmates following their recent altercation with forces there.

The group of lawyers was led by advocate Shabir AhmadBhat.  “On Friday we had visited the jailand authorities there narrated different story. Today, they gave contradictorystatements,” said advocate Bhat.

   

He refused to elaborate on the issue saying “we arepreparing a detailed report which will be submitted before the court.”  

Earlier, court of principal sessions judge Srinagar haddirected Srinagar central jail authorities to permit and facilitate visit of agroup of lawyers to jail. The development had come after advocate NA Rongafiled an application on Friday, praying for directions to jail authorities toallow him to meet the jail inmates.

Bhat claimed that jail inmates are still on protest. “Ourvisit lasted for just five to seven minutes. We were not allowed to go insideand talk to jail inmates inside barracks. In fact, we were allowed uptovisitor’s gallery where four jail inmates were called and they talked to us,”he said.

“Many jail inmates are wounded. The inmates hadobjected to breaking of barracks at night. Jail inmates told us their allbelongings were lying in barracks when jail authorities started dismantlingthem ” he said quoting inmates.

Bhat said that a group of lawyers was supposed to be led byadvocate Ronga. “But he (advocate Ronga) accompanied Mirwaiz Umar Farooq toDelhi and directed me to lead the group.”

Advocate Bhat said detailed report would be presented beforecourt and also shared with media shortly.
