IFCD sleeps on Padshahi Canal encroachments

Greater Kashmir

This is height of negligence that even despite the major floods of September 2014, the IFCD is silent over the bridge and other constructions along the Padshahi Canal.

Notwithstanding the claims of Irrigation and Flood Control Department that encroachments on major irrigation canals and other waterbodies are being removed, the IFCD is silent on concrete constructions on Padshahi Canal in Ahmad Nagar locality.

A delegation of civil society activists alleged that some land mafia active in the Ahmed Nagar Pandach area on Srinagar outskirts has constructed concrete bridge right over the Padshahi Canal to facilitate construction of a full-fledged residential colony.

"This is height of negligence that even despite the major floods of September 2014, the IFCD is silent over the bridge and other constructions along the Padshahi Canal. This amounts to criminal negligence and we plan to move Court over it," the delegation said.

They said despite repeated reminders to the IFCD and the concerned Tehsildar the administration has been silent. "It seems that land mafia role in destruction of waterbodies is so rampant that concerned don’t want to act," the delegation said.

A senior official in the IFCD said the matter had come to his notice. The revelation has popped up at a time when the High Court is monitoring conservation of riversides in the Valley.

Meanwhile the concerned citizens have appealed Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Rohit Kansal and District Development Commissioner Ganderbal Sarmad Hafeez  to personally look into the matter.
