Kashmir University ranks 53rd in NIRF 2019

The University of Kashmir has received 53rd position among the universities assessed in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)-2019.

The results were announced by the ministry of human resourcedevelopment (MHRD) on Monday.

   

The University has also bagged an overall ranking of 79 fromamongst all universities, IITs and other institutions assessed by the MHRDunder NIRF, according to the ranking body’s website.

However, among all the universities ranked by the MHRD, theKU has bagged 53rd slot.

The Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru topped the listamong the universities while as Indian Institute of Technology Madras hasbagged the first rank among all ranked institutions in the country.

Last year, the Kashmir University had bagged 47th rank amongthe universities and 71 among all the institutions.

“Last year it was not mandatory for every institutionto apply for NIRF ranking and all the institutions were not in competition.This year all the Universities and other IITs had applied for NIRFranking,” registrar Kashmir University, Nisar Ahmad Mir said.

In 2017 NIRF ranking, the varsity had figured at 73rdposition.

Last year, the MHRD made participating in the rankingframework from 2019 mandatory.

“Those public institutions which will not take part init will face fund cut,” union minister for human resource development,Prakash Javadekar had said.

For the second consecutive year, KU has surpassed JammuUniversity (JU) which was last year accorded autonomous status by the MHRD.

This year, the JU figured at 74th place in the NIRF rankingand at 51 among the universities’ category, the varsity doesn’t figure inoverall rankings of all institutions.

The Kashmir University has scored 59.39 (out of 100) inTeaching Learning Resources (TLR), 18.33 in Research and Professional (RPC),79.20 in Graduation Outcomes (GO) and 47.36 in Outreach and Inclusivity (OI).The University has got perception points as 1.63 as compared to last year’s0.0.

Last year, the varsity scored 62.39 in TLR, 20.08 in RPC,77.61 in GO and 36.99 in OI.

The point score of JU is 40.43 as compared to 43.19 pointslast year.

The JU’s parameter-wise figures are: TLR (56.50), RPC(16.51), GO (70.92), OI (41.52) and Perception (1.02). The score of JU in NIRF2018 ranking was TLR (65.22), RPC (18.20), GO (69.46), OI (39.44) andPerception (1.22).

According to officials, KU for the third consecutive yearhas lagged behind in Perception parameter where institutions are ranked on thebasis of Employers and Research Investors (25 marks): Peer Perception: AcademicPeers (50 marks) and Public Perception (25 marks).

“First perception is presence of foreign students studyingin the university which is zero. Besides, newspaper reportage about the varsityalso plays an important role in it. Generally, perception is more about how auniversity is seen from various perspectives,” an official said.

The NIRF was approved by the MHRD and launched on 29thSeptember 2015, outlining a methodology to rank institutions across thecountry.

The methodology draws from the overall recommendations abroad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identifythe parameters for ranking various universities and institutions.

The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning andResources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,””Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception.”
