Kutekul loses sheen to encroachments

Recalling the “good old days” when the rivulet roared, he said the channel has now been reduced to a drain. “Such was the width and depth of the channel that huge boats carrying tons of food grains would move in it smoothly,” he said.

The residents of Tankipora area in Shaher-e-Khaas have sought immediate removal of encroachments and illegal constructions along Kutekul banks. 

The Kutekul, which emerges from river Jhelum has lost its sheen to encroachments. “It formed the lifeline of Srinagar up to 70s as food grains meant for the city would be transported in boats through this channel,” said Ghulam Muhammad a local.

The residents sought immediate measures to restore the pristine glory of the stream. A senior official of Srinagar Municipal Corporation said the encroachment in Kutekul would be removed soon.
