Mirwaiz can’t travel to Delhi in ‘prevailing hostile situation’, says counsel

Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Mondaydecided not to appear in person before the National Investigation Agency (NIA)and instead submitted a written response to the probe agency through his legalcounsel.

“The notice (to Mirwaiz) appears to have been issuedon the basis of fallacious assumptions and misinformation solely aimed atmaligning the Mirwaiz-i-Kashmir, knowing his status and position, it appears tobe the outcome of considerations other than the law. My client is notacquainted with the subject matter of FIR/NIA Crime No. RC 10/2017/NIA/DLI,referred to in the notice,” said his legal counsel.

He said that it was unwise for his client to travelto Delhi “under the prevailing conditions of hostility wherein there is athreat to the personal safety of my client”.

“If the NIA wants to examine my client Mirwaiz UmarFarooq they can do so in Srinagar. He is willing to cooperate as he has nothingto hide,” said the counsel.
