A youth from uptown Rawalpora here died under mysterious circumstance, triggering protests from the victim’s family and locals on Sanat Nagar-Wanbal road.
Umar Ahmad Bhat (24) of Astanpora Rawalpora had left home on Sunday around 9 am to participate in an event at Tagore Hall. He died in SMHS hospital later during the day while being treated for “head injury”.
Bhat is survived by his aged mother. His father had passed away 20 year ago.
“On Sunday, I received a call at around 11:30 am from SMHS hospital…I was informed that Umar’s is in critical condition. Within ten minutes, I reached hospital, but he had breathed his last,” said Shahid Ahmad Shah, maternal uncle of the deceased.
According to Shah his nephew was found lying injured on road near Rangreth.
“Two persons had taken him to nearby private hospital wherefrom he was referred to SMHS hospital. One among the two persons was Umar’s friend,” he said.
When Umar was being shifted to SMHS hospital, his friend, according to Shah, had fled the vehicle near Lal Chowk during traffic jam.
Sensing “something fishy” the second person, a “stranger”, approached police station Shergari, from where Umar was taken to SMHS hospital.
Shah said the deceased’s family was not pointing fingers on anyone vis-à-vis Umar’s death, but “behavior of his friend has raised suspicion.”
Umar was running a shop in his locality and was also part-time painter. He was also fond of playing guitar.
“On Saturday late evening, he talked to me on phone. He said that organizers of event were impressed with his talent and that he will be given opportunity to perform outside state in events in coming days,” said Shah.
The Station House Officer, Police Station Shergari, Abtab Ahmad said police has started investigation into the incident.
An official said Umar’s friend has been detained for questioning.
