Neglected grounds get facelift for Eid prayers

In the run up to the Eid-ul-Fitr, authorities have started to give facelift to various grounds where Eid prayers are scheduled to be offered in the summer capital.     

Authorities have started cleaning of historic Eidgah in Downtown, where largest congregational Eid prayers are held in Kashmir.  

   

“Eidgah remains dilapidated as nobody caters for its maintenance round the year,” said Ali Muhammad of Eidgah.

He added that for past few days, the authorities have started cleaning it. Grass cutters and sweepers have been pressed into service. 

“I agree the ground gets much attention only in view of Eid-ul Fitr or Eid-ul-Zuha. The Eidgah ground is a sacred place and people have also responsibility to maintain its sanctity round the year,” said Nizam-u-Din Bhat, vice chairman J&K Muslim Wakf Board while replying to a query.

The ground inside Hazratbal shrine is maintained throughout the year as Chief Minister and senior officials on various occasions year keep visiting the shrine to take stock of arrangements for devotees.

Another large gathering is expected at Khadimill Allochibagh ground where Jamiat Ahlihadees, a religious organization, has announced to hold Eid prayers. 

“The ground is used for sports activities and authorities have never maintained it. It is local youth who contribute from their pockets  for any repairs,” said Ajaz Ahmad, a local.

He said that Srinagar Municipal Corporation pressed men and machinery for its sanitization soon after the religious organization announced to offer Eid prayers here.
