NIT Srinagar gets Rs 100 cr under PMDP for infrastructural development

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has been granted Rs 100 crore under Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) for over all infrastructural up gradation of the institute.

Out of the sanctioned Rs 100 crore, the NIT has received the grants worth Rs 87 crore under the PMDP which is being utilized for establishment of new infrastructure besides the face-lifting of the existing infrastructure at the institute.

   

“We are in process of up gradation of hostel facilities, medical facilities and develop sports infrastructure of international standard,” Director NIT Srinagar, Rakesh Sehgal said.

He said the funds received under PMDP will be utilized to set up high standard of e-education management system besides a data centre and development of IIED and CRFC.

“So far we have utilized an amount of Rs 60 crore out of Rs 87 crore which have been released from government of India,” he said.

The director NIT further stated that the institute has also received special grants under World Bank funded scheme TEQIP-III for the up gradation of teaching-learning methods, students training, undergraduate laboratory facilities, research facilities and other related academic activities.

“An amount of Rs 15 crore was initially allocated for NIT Srinagar under TEQIPIII in various heads. Later an additional grant of Rs 3.20 crore was sanctioned for the institute. We have utilized around 95 percent of the funds which were allocated for the institute,” he informed.

He said the work on some mega developmental projects is under way at the institute which include construct in of auditorium, guest house, specialized sports facilities and construction of additional Girls and over 700 bedded hostel for boys as well.

“We have also started renovation of academic and residential blocks and hostel blocks at the campus,” he said.

About the future plans about improving academic scenario, the director said they are expecting to enroll over 6000 students including UG, PG and research scholars by 2025.

“We are trying make NIT Srinagar a globally acclaimed technical institute with cutting edge research in frontier areas of local, regional national and global importance.
