Police bust demonetized currency gang

Police on Tuesday claimed to have busted two separate gangs in possession of demonetized currency amounting to Rs 25 lakhs and selling cars stolen from other states in Srinagar.

Addressing a press conference here, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Dr Haseeb Mughal said three persons including two non-state subjects were arrested in these cases.

The SSP said that on specific information, Police Station Rajbagh apprehended one Muhammad Iqbal Dar son of Abdul Salam Dar resident of Bogund Kulgam and recovered demonetized currency notes amounting to Rs three lakh from his possession.

“During questioning, he disclosed that he has dumped more money in a hideout at Jawahar Nagar area. Police raided the house of Ghulam Ahmad son of Abdul Ahad at Jawahar Nagar and recovered demonetized currency worth Rs 25 lakh,” the SSP said.

“Police has roped in Income Tax department to find out how these persons managed to save this huge amount without converting it to the new currency. There seems to be a nexus of some people who still posses old currency and we are probing that,” he said.  The SSP was flanked by Senior Superintendent (South city) Dr G.V.Sundeep Chakravarthy.  Mughal and Dr Sundeep had constituted special teams to crack these cases.

About other case, the SSP said police received a complaint from Sajad Ahmad Jan son of Farooq Ahmad Jan, resident of  Kursoo, Rajbagh and Wajahat Amin Bhat son of Muhammad Amin Bhat of Batpora, Sopore stating that that their Motor Cycle (JKOIR-7107) and Scooty (JK05E-4363) respectively were stolen by some unknown persons from Jawahar Nagar and LD Hospital.

“In this connection case FIR No. 21/2019 U/S 379 RPC and 66/2019 U/S 379 RPC were registered in Police  Station Rajbagh and investigation set into motion,” he said.

“During the course of investigation, one suspect namely Kiyaas Ahmad War son of Fayaz Ahmad War R/o Baki Aaker Handwara was arrested for questioning. He confessed to his involvement in both the incidents. The motor cycle and scooty were handed over to its owners as per the court directions.”

 About the other case, the SSP Srinagar said that on July 19, a complaint was lodged by one Nazrul Islam son of Late Abdul Ahad R/o Kangan Ganderbal that he has purchased one BMW vehicle bearing registration number DL1CM-6235 from Shahid Ahmad and Sahil residents of Kolkatta and paid Rs 2.50 lakhs to the owner of the vehicle.

“However, the two residents of Kolkata cheated him and stole the same vehicle from his possession and managed to escape from Rajbagh area where they were staying for a night in a hotel,” Mughal said.

He said during the course of investigation, both the accused persons were arrested and stolen vehicle was recovered from their possession. “The cases were cracked by special team headed by SHO Rajbagh Inspector Parvaiz Ahmad under close supervision of SDPO Sadder Shabir Ahmad Khan,” the SSP said. He appealed people not to by vehicles or any other property before checking documents and ownership properly.
