Police crack several theft cases in uptown areas

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday cracked several theft cases in uptown areas here by arresting a thief who was posing as a matchmaker and recovering stolen gold ornaments worth Rs 34 lakh from his possession. 

Addressing a press conference here, Senior Superintendent ofPolice (SSP) Srinagar, Dr Haseeb Mughal said identified the thief as BilalAhmed Gani son of late Abdul Aziz Ganai, of Chatpora, Pulwama. He said about Rs34 lakh worth stolen gold, cash and also seven laptops were recovered from hispossession.

   

“Bilal posed as a matchmaker. He was involved in eight theftcases of in several areas including Shergari, Shaheed Gunj, Rajbagh, Saddar andParimpora. He was living in Khanyar area of Srinagar for past six months,” theSSP said.

He said that since January 2019, thefts were reported fromSrinagar areas. “Police took the case seriously and a team was constitutedunder his supervision. The team comprised S P City (south) Dr GV SundeepChakravarthy, SDPO Shaheed Gunj Imran Malik, SHO Shaheed Gunj Aftab Ahmed.

“The team zeroed in on Bilal and arrested him after thesupport of series of scientific and human investigate techniques,” the SSPsaid. He said that the police recovered gold jewellery, laptops along with someforeign currency of several countries.

“Complainants were informed to recognize their stolenproperty and can get it released from Court of Law. About six cases of theftwere also solved by arresting the accused and on his revelations made afterinterrogation,” said the SSP.

“Bilal would be in knowhow of the quantity of gold in aparticular house. A gold smith was also arrested for buying the stolen goldfrom Bilal,” he said.
