Police’s cyber cell outsmarts hackers

The cyber crime cell of J&K Police has recovered Rs 16 lakh from hackers who had targeted several people while posing as bank officials and owners of online business centers.  

In one such case Nazir Ahmad Ganaie of Nagam in Budgam was duped of Rs one lack by a hacker. 

   

Narrating the incident Ganaie said a caller introduced himself as J&K Bank official and informed him that his debit card (ATM card) has been blocked. “He politely told me that he has been asked to help me for unblocking the card. I shared my debit card number and all other details with him,” Ganie said.

Within minutes Ganaie account was debited by Rs one lakh by the scammer.  The next day Ganaie approached cyber crime wing and sought help to recover lost money.

“They recovered my hard earned money and returned it within one week,” he said.

Another youth Junaid Ahmad from the summer capital lost Rs 40,000 after he ordered two cell phones from an online website. The website turned out to be fraudulent and had sent “cloned phones” to Ahmad. 

“Cyber crime police came to my rescue and recovered the money,” he said.

An official said from January 2018 the cyber crime cell has recovered Rs 16 lakh from hackers who had duped several persons.

He said need of the hour was to spread awareness among public about such frauds. He said, in most of the cases, they found that the victims were not aware about the frauds. 

“People should remain cautious about strange phone calls, messages or e-mails regarding lottery and shouldn’t share their account details and credit and debit card details with anybody,” he said.

Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar Imtiyaz Ismail said around 100 complaints pertaining to cyber crimes and other frauds were received from January 2018.

“Around Rs 16 lakh has been recovered by the cyber cell,” he said.
