Principal’s custodial death: GMC submits initial postmortem report

The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar today submitted preliminary autopsy report of Awantipora school principal, Rizwan Asad Pandith, who had died in police custody, to authorities probing the case.

An official said the report was finalised on Friday andhanded over to the authorities conducting inquiry into the custodial death.

   

As per the findings, Rizwan had died of “excessive bleedingcaused by deep wounds on his body”. “He had deep wounds on thighs, hips andabdomen. Bleeding through external wounds has been suspected to be caused bysome sharp object,” the official said. “Excessive bleeding can lead to fatalshock.”

While quoting the findings, the official said, Rizwan had nointernal injuries. “The X- Ray and CT Scan have not revealed any such injury,”he said.

As per the findings the death had taken place “at least 12hours” prior to autopsy, which was carried out on afternoon of last Tuesday bya team of doctors from the GMC and directorate of health services Kashmir.

Rizwan’s left eye had turned black “probably due to blunttrauma”, the official said. Some of the injuries on the body of the youth werefound to be “older than others”.

According to authorities at the GMC the final autopsy reportwill take about two weeks. “Final report will be compiled after reports arereceived from forensic laboratory and pathology and radiology department of themedical college,” the official said.

Rizwan was picked up by police for questioning late onSunday from his home in Awantipora. His body was handed over to his family onTuesday.
