Prisoners damaged jail property: SSP Central Jail

A day after nocturnal clashes at Central Jail Srinagar, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Central Jail Saturday said that the situation was brought under control and investigation into the matter has been taken up.

In a statement, the SSP Central Jail Srinagar said that the matter was brought in the notice of DGP prisons , district magistrate Srinagar, deputy inspector general of police Central Kashmir and also the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Srinagar and other officers who monitored the situation. “The situation remained tense for the entire night and in the morning district magistrate Srinagar, DIG central Kashmir range and SSP Srinagar went inside the jail and with their hectic efforts the situation as brought under control,” the statement said. “The police have taken up the cognizance of the heavy loss of government property and the matter is under investigation.”

   

The SSP central Jail said that as has been observed by the visiting teams of J&K judiciary, as well as the state women commission and also state human rights commission, the present infrastructure available in central jail Srinagar is more than a century old.

“Subsequently, the renovation work is being carried out regularly in order to accommodate the prisoners with dignity,” the statement said. “It was the efforts put forth by the department that four new barracks were approved and construction was in full swing and two barracks were handed over to this institution within shortest span of time for lodgment of prisoners and accordingly prisoners lodged in old barrack number 1, were shifted to the newly constructed barrack in order to start the renovation of barrack in question.”

“While undertaking the renovation work of barrack number 1 on April 4, some blind portion of the barrack was dismantled which was being used by the inmates to carry out their anti national, illegal activities.

Suddenly, the jail inmates lodged in the adjoining barracks raised anti-national slogans and within no time, in view of the old and dilapidated structure of barracks broke out and locking handles, doors, window panes and ventilators and came out of their barracks and started pelting stones on the laborers as well as the staff posted in the jail,” the statement said.

“The laborers and the staff had miraculous escape as theagitated/violent jail inmates in the first instance broke out the door of theprisoners mess and taking possession of more than seven LPG cylinders whichthey put on fire at different places. The inmates went berserk and starteddamaging the jail property. They set on fire prisoners’ mess, canteen barrackwhich got damaged completely,” it added.
