Prompted by protest, SMC removes filth from Regal Chowk

Srinagar municipal corporation (SMC) Wednesday removed filth from main road at Regal Chowk  following protests by local traders.

The authorities had removed soil and other filth from the surface drainage at Regal Chowk and its adjacent areas. However, all the filth was kept on the roadside

“It was removed from drainage three days ago. It has started to produce bad smell,” said a local shopkeeper while pointing towards the filth kept at roadside by SMC.

Local traders said that they had taken up the matter with concerned authorities and appealed them to remove it.

On Wednesday afternoon, the local traders under the banner of Regal Chowk traders association led by its president Farhan Kitab staged protest at Regal Chowk, demanding removal of the filth.

“We were forced to stage protest as our earlier plea had fallen on deaf ears,” Kitab told Greater Kashmir.

He added that the filth was now gradually turning into dust entering into shops and showrooms.

“It is shameful to keep the city roads especially Regal Chowk which remain busy with locals, commutes and tourists,” he said.

However, after the intervention of local police, the protestors dispersed off peacefully. As per Kitab, the police assured them that they would take up the matter with concerned officials to seek timely action.
