Protests rock Nowgam against arrest of 2 CUK students

Protests erupted at Central University of Kashmir (CUK) campus at Nowgam here on city outskirts on Saturday morning against the arrest of two students by government forces.

The students assembled in the campus and took out a protest march. They blocked the traffic movement on Srinagar-Jammu highway to demand immediate release of their fellow students. Students boycotted their classes and staged demonstrations in the campuses. The protesting students said that two political science students, identified as Suhail from Shopian and Ismail from Baramulla were detained by the government forces from their rented accommodation near the varsity.

The students decried the arrests saying that “the students were picked up by forces during night hours without informing their parents”.

“The duo was not presented before a magistrate within 24 hours as per the procedure,” said a female student during the protest.

Head of the political science department, Dr Khalid said both the arrested students regularly attended their classes. “For us they are only students,” he said.

Vice Chancellor CUK, Prof. Mehraj ud Din said the varsity has taken up the matter with civil administration and concerned superintendent of police.

“We were assured that the students will be set free if they were not involved in any case,” he said. He said the varsity authorities have also informed the families of both the students. The CUK students threatened to continue their protest if the duo was not released at the earliest.
