SMC employees call off strike after four days

The protesting Srinagar Municipal Corporation employees on Friday evening called off their strike after the authorities “agreed to their genuine demands.”

President SMC Field Staffers, Mehraj-ul-Din Bujja, who led the four day strike, said: “The authorities have agreed to our genuine demands and we have unanimously decided to resume work from Saturday (January 5).

He added that employees have been asked to work extra hours to remove all the garbage and ensure restoration of sanitation in all municipal wards on war-footing basis.

“The authorities assured us that councilors will not make any unnecessary interference in the official duty of employees. Our demand to pay salaries of consolidated employees through internal finance has been also agreed to be implemented in three phases,” he said.

The employees started their strike on Tuesday to press for their demands which included action against ‘misbehaving’ councillors and officials, and regularisation of workers who have completed seven years in temporary state.
