Snowfall forecast: SMC gears up men and machinery

Authorities at Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Monday geared up men and machinery in the wake of snowfall forecast.

The local Meteorological Department has predicted moderate to heavy snowfall from Tuesday (December 8).

   

An official said that 16 loaders and four JCBs are available for clearance of lanes and by-lanes. “We have also chalked out strategy to clear snowfall on city roads. Our priority will be to clear the roads leading to various hospital, masjids and shrines,” said SMC secretary Akbar Sofi.

He added that all ward officers have been directed to remain alert and ensure dewatering and clearance of roads in case of snowfall.

“We have also established a control room which will function under the supervision of SMC commissioner, who has issued clear directions to all officials to ensure that people don’t suffer post snowfall,” he said.

SMC commissioner Gazanfar Ali also reviewed the arrangements for snow clearance on Monday. “During the meeting, the commissioner expressed satisfaction over adequate preparedness,” said an official.

SMC has kept ready sucker machines and dewatering pumps. “Around 4,000 officials have been kept ready to ensure manual clearance of snow,” an official said.

He informed that the SMC has also established helplines number— 0194-2474499 and 0194-2470465, for general public.

SMC Commissioner, Gazanfar Ali said: “We have directed officials to remain present and be vigilant. Men and machinery have been activated to dewater the waterlogged areas, if any, during snowfall.”

“A control room has been established to monitor the progress of snow clearance and for receiving grievance and complaints post snowfall,” he added.
