Students hold candle light vigil at KU for Kathua victim

The students of Kashmir University on Monday held a candle light protest to demand a fair and a speedy trial in rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl from Kathua.

Scores of students from different departments and hostlers marched from Sir Syed Gate towards Allama Iqbal Library in the evening to demand justice for the victim.

The students, mostly female students, lit hundreds of candles to register protest against the gruesome crime that shook the state and evoked condemnation from across the world.

Holding placards and banners, which read, “Stop giving impunity to culprits”, the students demanded capital punishment for accused involved in the crime. “The death penalty should be the sole punishment to the culprits. This will send a strong message,” said a group of protesting students.

During the protest march, which continued for almost half an hour, the students raised anti government and pro freedom slogans while demanding the justice.
