Students protest Govt decision to shift them to other colleges

Students of New Women College here on Wednesday staged a protest against government’s decision to shift them to other colleges in the city.

Scores of students assembled at Press Enclave and said theywere enrolled in New Women’s College at the time of their admission. But, theysaid, the authorities have decdied to shift them to Amar Singh College andGovernment Degree College Nawakadal.

   

“We oppose this decision. It is injustice with us,” aprotesting student said.

The students said the government wants to make the NewWomen’s College functional from its permanent campus at Zakura. Till now, thecollege was functioning from a make shift arrangement in library block of theAmar Singh (AS) College here.

Principal, New Womens’ Degree College Maheen Mustafa saidthey were implementing the government directions to shift the students to othercolleges as at least 80 percent of students enrolled in the college were fromdifferent areas of Budgam district.

She said it won’t be possible for students of Budgam tocover 40 kilometres of journey on daily basis to reach to Zakura campus.

Recently, the secretary higher education department conveneda review meeting with college principals of Kashmir division wherein it wasinformed that the infrastructure and other necessary facilities of New Women’sCollege were completed at Zakura.
