Sunday Market shut for 'security reasons'

A Sunday Market trader said: “Given the sunny day, this could have been a day of brisk business but the police yet again put us to inconvenience as we didn’t earn even a penny for the whole day.”

The weekly Sunday Market remained shut as a part of security preparedness for the January 26 celebrations in the City.

A Sunday Market trader said: “Given the sunny day, this could have been a day of brisk business but the police yet again put us to inconvenience as we didn’t earn even a penny for the whole day.”

The vendors said for the past over two decades the Sunday Market has been the “first victim” of any security arrangements in the City. “We don’t understand why the government is hell bent to snatch our livelihood in the garb of security arrangements. When shopkeepers are not asked to keep their establishments shut, why we?” they asked.

“After floods the government should have been compassionate towards our rehabilitation but in reality we continue to be the worst victims.”

A police official said the market was closed for security reasons.
