A toddler Monday morning went missing from Now Pora locality of north City –triggering massive protests while later in the day police fished out her body from a nearby marsh. She is believed to have drowned.

Panic griped Now Pora locality when 2-year-old Aksa Jan went missing from her house. Amid an instant hunt to trace her out, the family and neighborhood people feared she was kidnapped.

This triggered massive protests in the locality with the people taking to streets and blocking the main road. Police rushed to the area and pacified them to let the vehicular traffic be restored.

As senior police officials including City police chief Amit Kumar got to know about the incident, the cops swung into action on multiple fronts.

"We flashed messages to all exit and entry points into the City.

Teams were also alerted on airport and the Jawahar Tunnel," said a senior police official.

But as locals kept discussing the kidnapping angle, a special police team started searches in the backyard marsh. By 5:00 PM police fished out her body and took it for postmortem while the bereaved family ruled out any foul play.

On the fateful morning, her mother busy with domestic work had kept Aksa in adjacent room. "She(Aksa)  must have opened the door and silently sneaked out," the bereaved said.

A police handout while confirming the incident said: "Srinagar police along with a team of SDRF recovered the body of a missing girl from marshy waters near her home at Khayam."

"Zahoor Ahmad Khanday resident of Bilal Colony Khayam, Srinagar today reported in Police Station Khanyar that his 03 year old girl Aksa Jan is missing from her home. Police immediately launched a massive search in the area for the missing girl."

"Later in the day the missing girl was traced dead in a marshy water near her home. Police and SDRF had a tough time retrieving the body from water that was 20ft deep. Police has started investigation under section 174 CrPC in this regard," the police handout added.

It is second such tragedy in the area within a year. In May 2014, three-year-old Faheem Asgar of Now Pora disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

Believed to have drowned in a nearby waterbody, his body was finally fished out from Wullar in north Kashmir. Meanwhile the locals have demanded fencing of waterbodies in area to avoid recurrence any such incident.
