Traffic jams in city centre areas take toll on commuters

Various areas of city centre on Monday witnessed traffic jams causing immense problems to commuters.

The problem was compounded due to presence of snow mounds on roadsides. “The traffic jam was such that it has me nearly an hour to reach LalChowk from Sonwar,” said Bashir Ahmad, a commuter.

Hundreds of vehicles were stuck in traffic jams at Jahangir Chowk, Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh, TRC, Dalgate, Regal Chowk, Khayam, Rambagh and Batamaloo. Many ambulances were also stranded in the gridlocks.

Due to presence of snow on roadsides, motorists struggled to drive their vehicles at normal speed. “It is ironical that authorities failed to clear snow from main roads leading to traffic jams,” said Parvez Ahmad, a motorist pointing towards snow mounds at MA Road.

The problem was compounded as traffic light system was switched off at various places. “This also added to traffic jams. There is need to streamline the traffic system in Srinagar,” said Arshad Ahmad a commuter.
