Waterlogging in city areas amid downpour

Several areas of the summer capital were waterlogged following heavy rains on Monday evening.

Normal life was affected as hailstorm swept across the cityfollowed by heavy downpour causing waterlogging in various areas here.

   

Vehicular movement was hampered due to water-logging atRegal Chowk, Exhibition Crossing, Maulana Azad Road, Residency Road, SamandarBagh, Munwarabad, Bemina, Mehjoor Nagar and Chanapora localities.

Coupled with defunct drainage system, several areas inDowntown turned into cesspool.

Commuters expressed resentment against authorities forfailing to put in place proper drainage system.

The sudden rains affected several marriage functions whenguests were being served meals.

The pictures from disruption in marriage functions due torains were also posted on social networking sites. Some pictures showedwater-logged tents.

Authorities claim that 80 pumping stations and 115 mobilepumping units were pressed into service for dewatering in affected areas.However, most of the locals complained that these pumping stations don’tfunctional properly.

People expressed resentment against authorities for failingto put efficient drainage system on place for quick dewatering process.”It is ironical that few minutes of rains waters-logs major roads inSrinagar,” said Sajad Ahmad a commuter.One of the drainage projects being executed bySrinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) from Post Office to Court Road is yet tobe completed despite missing of several deadlines.
