Unidentified gunmen shot dead a famous goldsmith at Sarai Bala area here on Thursday evening and managed their escape from the spot.
Reports said unidentified gunmen whose number was not immediately known fired upon Satpal Nischal, owner of Nischal Jewelers at Sarai Bala at 6.30 pm. He was critically injured and shifted to hospital, however hospital authorities declared him brought dead.
Soon after the incident joint contingents of police and paramilitary forces carried out a cordon and search operation in the area but no one was arrested.
The incident created panic in the area. The shopkeepers and vendors in the area left for safer places.
Soon after the incident, security across the city was beefed up.
Police said that a case has been registered and investigations taken up.
