LeT militant killed in Sopore gunfight: Police

A Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was killed in a brief gunfight with security forces here in north Kashmir on Wednesday, police said.

A police official while giving the details of the encounter said that a joint team of Army’s 22 RR, 92 and 179 battalions of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)   and Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police jointly launched a search operation at Mir Mohalla of Gundbrath in Sopore this morning. “After searching for hours a militant hiding in the area fired upon the joint party of the forces. The fire was retaliated triggering a gun battle in which the militant was killed,” he added.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sopore, Javed Iqbal identified the slain militant as Adnan Ahmad Channa son of Ali Muhammad Channa of Arampora, Baramulla. “Channa was a C-category militant and was affiliated with LeT militant outfit,” he said. As the word about the killing of a local militant spread in Sopore and Baramulla towns, youth took to the streets and staged protests. Soon after the gunfight broke out mobile internet services were suspended in Sopore areas and Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore, AshiqHussain, ordered closure of Degree College Sopore as a “precautionary measure.”  Meanwhile, a Police spokesman in a statement later in the evening said, “The slain militant was wanted by law for his complicity in militancy related incidents, including attack on security establishments and civilians. He was operating in the areas of Baramulla and Sopore and was involved in planning and executing several attacks in the area. Several cases were registered against him including Case FIR No. 41/2019 pertaining to the killing of a civilian ArjumandMajeedBhat in JattiBaramulla in March 2019, Case FIR No. 33/2019 pertaining to firing on a civilian Feroz Ahmad Gojree of ZalooraSopore in May 2019. He was involved in recruiting locals into militant ranks.”  “With the efforts of police and security forces it was a clean operation and no collateral damage happened during the encounter. Incriminating material including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All these materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other cases,” the spokesman added.
