Malik’s health severely affected in Tihar, says his sister

The family members of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik, who is held in New Delhi’s Tihar jail, on Friday alleged that Malik has turned frail and is being denied all the rights guaranteed by the jail manual for prisoners.

Malik’s mother and sisters also alleged thatthe Front chairman has been kept in “solitary confinement” in Tihar, where heis not even allowed to read books.

“We don’t think he will survive for long ifthis treatment continues,” Malik’s sister told the media at his Maisuma home.

“After long wait and hectic efforts we wereable to meet him. He is so weak that he couldn’t even stand properly. We talkedto him from a distance and the meeting lasted for only 15 minutes,” she said.Malik’s mother and other family members were also present.

Malik’s sister appealed to the civil societyto look into the issue of “ill-treatment meted out to her brother.”

She said Malik has been kept in a cage-likecell.

“My brother is not able to walk out of hiscell. He told me that he sees only two policemen a day, one who brings him foodin the afternoon and another who comes to see him at 4 pm,” she added.

She said that her brother was “like an openbook” but has been booked under the Public Safety Act and then shifted toDelhi, handed over to NIA and lodged in Tihar prison.

“The jail authorities didn’t let us give himtwo books. Prisoners have rights guaranteed in every jail manual but in mybrother’s case all such rights are being denied. We want to ask that if he is aprisoner why even rights guaranteed by jail manuals are denied to him,” shesaid.

During a medical check-up recently, doctorshave told Malik that he has developed fresh complications, she said.

“This all is because he has been caged in asmall room. And if the ill treatment continues he won’t survive for long. Weare worried about him as we have seen with our eyes the way he is being treatedin Tihar,” she said.

“If something happens to Malik thegovernment is to blame entirely,” she said.

A Delhi court last week sent Malik tojudicial custody till May 24. He was arrested in a case related to allegedfunding of separatists and militant groups in Jammu and Kashmir.
