LMD imposes penalty of Rs 60,000 on Cosmetics Company

The Legal Metrology Department (LMD) on Saturday imposed a fine of Rs 60000 on a cosmetic company for violating the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act.

According to a handout issued here, the action was taken on basis of the complaints received from the aggrieved consumers.

   

The inspection of various trading premises dealing in cosmetics and toiletry items in Srinagar and Pulwama was held under the supervision of Deputy Controller Consumer Protection Kashmir, Nazir Ahmad.

During the inspection, some items were seized that were not conforming to the labeling provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 read with Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.

“A case against a Manufacturing Company was registered for violating the provisions of above said Act/Rules and a penalty of Rs 60000 was imposed on the erring company,” the official handout reads.

It further states that the item packed must confirm the mandatory declaration on it.

The handout reads that earlier, Gas Agency and Bakery Units were also penalized for overcharging and a composition of Rs 2.30 lakh were realized by the Legal Metrology Unit during the last two months and a verification fee of Rs 1.5 lakh were also collected during the said period.

“A consumer alert has been sounded by Legal Metrology Unit asking consumers to Check MRP & Manufacturing date on Pre-Packed commodities in its effort to avoid gullible consumers falling prey to malpractices,” the handout reads.
