NIA raids residences of Mirwaiz, Malik, others

The National Investigation Agency on Tuesday carried outraids at the houses of top separatist leaders including Hurriyat Conference (M)chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and chairman Jammu and Kashmir Liberation FrontMuhammad Yasin Malik.

   

An NIA spokesman said the probe agency carried out searchesat seven locations in Srinagar in connection with its investigation into afunding case.

He said these included premises belonging to Malik, Mirwaiz,president JKDFP Shabir Shah, chairman Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Muhammad Ashraf,general secretary APHC Masarat Alam, chairman JKSM Zaffar Akbar Bhat and SyedAli Geelani’s son Naseem Geelani.

He said that NIA teams were accompanied by CRPF and Jammu& Kashmir police personnel.

The spokesman said that during the searches, NIA teamsrecovered “incriminating” documents including property papers, financialtransactions receipts and bank account details.

“Electronic devices including laptops, e-tablets, mobilephones, pen drives, communication system and DVRs were also seized during thesearches,” the spokesman said.

“Significantly, letter heads of different militantorganisations as well as documents relating to recommendations for visa foradmission in Pakistan educational institutions were found,” he said.

The spokesman said a high-tech internet communication set upwas also recovered from the residence of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

In 2017, NIA had arrested seven Kashmiri separatistleaders—Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s son-in-law Altaf Ahmed Shah;Tehreek-e-Hurriyat’s Ayaz Akbar and Mehrajuddin Kalwal; Shahid-ul-Islam, who isfrom the Mirwaiz faction of the Hurriyat; Nayeem Khan of the Jammu KashmirNational Front, Peer Saifullah and Farooq Ahmed Dar aka Bitta Karatay.
