Three Kashmirs

A place where contradictions are piled, one over another

I come from three Kashmirs

A Kashmir which boasts of Asia’s biggest Tulip Garden

one where a Girija is hacked to pieces on a sawmill

and where bodies of Asiya and Neelofer are recovered from a Nallah

I come from three Kashmirs

Kashmir which has a tourist inflow of 127K a month

where I visit my home to stay in a Hotel

that has cordon & search operations every other day

I come from three Kashmirs

which is a hub of winter sports

with rows of abandoned houses

where the matryr’s graveyards are overflowing

I come from three Kashmirs

the one where Clock Tower is illuminated in National colours

where a communal fabric was torn to trigger an exodus

and where a Gaw Kadal massacre happened

I come from three Kashmirs

where the tricolour is hosted on 80ft flagpole

which stands witness to Wandhama massacre

a Kashmir shamed by incidents of Kunan Poshpora

I come from three Kashmirs

one where Army carries relief operations during floods

where bullets snuff out a life hiding in a rice drum.

where an armyman ties a human shield to his jeep.

I come from three Kashmirs

one which houses the open-air floating theatre

with orphans loitering in refugee camps

which is a land of half-widows

I come from three Kashmirs

where food festivals are hosted

one where the woes of Jagti Camp remain unheard.

where a dysfunctional Fax machine changes the destiny of a state

I come from three Kashmirs

a showcase for mainland investors

where innocent Bindroo is killed in broad daylight

and where Altaf and Mudasir get killed in crossfire

I come from three Kashmirs

a Kashmir which is supposedly shining

Kashmir which is wailing since thirty years.

Kashmir which is drenched in blood.

I come from Kashmir – the irony, the paradox, the land of strife.
