Promoting women entrepreneurship

Launching a comprehensive programme for promoting participation of women in business entrepreneurial activities is by all means a commendable initiative. Empowering women in terms of their economic status has been the core emphasis of the modern day mind. To his end we have seen changes being made at the levels of legislature, administration and economic policies. It has been a long struggle by the modern day society, and the state, to lift the disempowered sections and make their status at par with others. In J&K too, we have seen how girl education was promoted and it yielded huge results. We have seen how reservation in different professional courses benefited different sections of our society, among them girls. Of late we have seen women participating in business activities and earning a name for themselves. We have a good number of women in J&K who, by dint of hard-work, carved a niche for themselves in industrial activities. This has helped in breaking a stereotype that women can not enter business. Looking at some courageous examples others followed and we saw an uptick in small and medium scale industries when it comes to women entrepreneurship. Now it is no more a taboo, and we have a sizeable presence of women in business sector. This is a step towards progress. If women can participate in business it will finally make our families stronger in terms of their financial strength and thus help build a robust society. If our societal attitudes change to accommodate such initiatives we can expect a change at the grassroots level as we can have our cottage industry develop immensely. Housla – inspiring her growth is thus a right step in an absolutely right direction. Government needs to make entrepreneurship easier for all, especially women. An awareness campaign needs to be launched to attract more womenfolk towards such programmes, and help overcome a general sense of inhibition. Such programmes create an enabling atmosphere and that is what is required in the first instance to kick start a programme
