Massive protests erupted in Kalakote area of Rajouri district today after a "sacrilegious" act reportedly took place in Khadariyan village, forcing authorities to suspend internet services in the district.

As per reports, a villager claimed to have found a slaughtered calf lying near his Atta Chaki early in the morning.

News of the incident spread like wildfire in the area and hundreds of people rushed the spot. A team led by SHO Kalakote, SDM Kalakote and other officers also reached the spot after which a team of veterinary doctors was called on the spot which conducted post mortem on the calf.

Meanwhile, locals of the area staged protest at Khadariyan village raising slogans against government authorities. Scores of people also assembled on Rajouri-Kalakote road at Balli and blocked it for vehicular traffic at 9 am.

These protesters claimed that the 'sacrilegious act' has been committed by communal forces that are hell bent to disturb peace and communal harmony in the area.

Initially the police and civil officers tried to intervene in the matter assuring people of stern action against the accused, but locals refused to call off the protest.

Later these locals took out a protest rally from Khadariyan to Kalakote town, at a distance of 13 kilometres, raising slogans against the government authorities.

Protesting people claimed that the authorities have failed to take action against anti-social elements, adding that bovine smuggling is going on unabated in the district.

The protest continued for about an hour after which DC Rajouri Shabir Ahmed Bhat and SSP Rajeshwar Singh reached the spot and interacted with the protesting people.

The officers assured the protesters that police has lodged a complaint in the matter and investigation has been started. They further assured the agitated people that the accused will be nailed down at an earliest following which the protest was called off.
