After assuming office earlier this month, the Army's Northern Command chief Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh paid his maiden visit to the forward areas of twin border districts Rajouri and Poonch of Jammu province on Saturday. The commander reviewed the security preparedness along the Line of Control.

General Singh, along with Lieutenant General Saranjeet Singh, General Officer Commanding Nagrota-based 16 Corps and formation commander, carried out aerial operational reconnaissance of the forward areas along the LoC in Krishna Ghati Sector of Poonch.

Defense sources said the Army Commander's visit was a review cum an introductory meet to meet all the field commanders.

"During the visit, Army Commander reviewed the preparedness of the 16 Crops in countering both conventional and sub-conventional threats in the region and stressed on ensuring foolproof security measures," sources said.

The Army Commander took first-hand account of operational matters and deployment of troops in the remote areas under extremely harsh and difficult conditions. He also took stock of the security apparatus in the sensitive areas and complimented all in successfully maintaining a high state of vigil.

While interacting with the troops on ground, the General also appreciated the coordinated efforts being made by all security agencies in the area to maintain peace, he said.

The visit, a source said, comes in the wake of recent ceasefire violations  in forward areas.
